Terroir

Domaine Begude lies at 300m altitude in the northern most limit of the Limoux appellation

Our vines benefit from the extremely wide diurnal temperature range here, with hot sunny days and dramatically cooler nights. This produces naturally balanced fresh wines with great purity.

The growing conditions are similar to those in Burgundy and indeed, 80% of the vineyard’s production is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The long cool growing season here allows for well balanced, fruit driven wines that are underpinned with a natural freshness.

The vines surround the winery, on mainly south eastern or southern facing slopes, meaning the fruit can be in the press within minutes of harvesting and in optimal condition.

The estate is a total of 72 hectares, of which 26.5 are under vine at between 270-320m in altitude and our soil is predominantly clay/limestone. The substructure of the vineyard is clay so the soil retains water deep in the ground to feed the roots. This means that the vines do not suffer from a lack of water once they are established. Their deep root growth also improves the physiological maturity of the vines and the grapes. To fully reflect the terroir we do not employ an irrigation system.
